the direction of Chairman
Talmadge, the Committee
on Agriculture, Nutrition,
and Forestry has begun the
preliminary work of
developmg new general
farm legislation that must be
enacted next year to replace
the Food and Agriculture
Act of 1977.
The starting point of this
effort is a Committee study
of the forces and influences
that have shaped and af
fected the structure of
American agriculture as it

Secretary Bergland’s
initiation of a national
dialogue on farm structure
But it also is intended as a
legislative resource book on
farm structure, both
generally and with specific
reference to major com
modities, by the best
authorities on agricultural
policy m the United States.
The product of the study is
included in the report, Farm
Structure, A Historical
Perspective on Changes in
the Number and Size of
Farms.
It is hoped that the study
and the report will provide
basic background in
formation for the 1981 farm
bill. As Chairman Talmadge
states m the fore ward- “This
publication marks the
beginning of the committee’s
task of writing that bill.”
