“Mom, what’s that funny
looking thing propped behind
the door to the stairs? ”
“What funny-looking
thing’”
“You know, that folding
metal thing with blue legs
and flowered pink material
on it?”
Oh, that thing. That, my
dear, is an ironing board.
Yes, it is something left over
from the “olden days,” when
I was younger.
You see, once upon a time
we used that contraption
every week for a job called
“ironing.” There was this
electrical appliance, kind of
triangle-shaped with a
handle on top, that got very
hot when you plugged it in.
When it go too hot to touch,
then it was ready to use.

wrinkles?”
Well, back m those ancient

things as polyester double
knits or electric clothes

When clothes were washed,
the fabric dried looking like
something that had been lost
under the bed for a week or
two. Then we had to stand
for hours holding that hot
iron and pressing those
creases out. As 1 remember,
there was also a thick, gooey
liquid called “starch” that

“Why?”
You know, I used to
wonder the same thing when
I was a kid. I never got a
sensible answer, either.
We little kids used to leam
how to iron on simple, flat
things like hankies and
cotton dish towels, before
they’d let us go on to the
harder stuff like shirts or
dresses. And, seems I’ve
even heard of people that
actually ironed denim jeans

“Ge, I think I heard
