D2o—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 19,1980 Polled Herefords top tested STATE COLLEGE - Polled Herefords were the top selling bulls m Penn State’s Seventh Per formance Tested Bull Sale. The top selling bull was consigned by Falkland Farms, Schellsburg, Bed ford County. An Enforcer son, this bull had an average daily gam of 3.96 pounds. His adjusted 365 day weight was 1,122 pounds, his frame score was rated five and his fat thickness was 0.37 inches. The top bull sold to Roy Hunt, Portersville, Lawrence County for $5075. This bull was consigned by James Ellenberger of Kittanning, Armstrong County. Despite the typical Penn State weather, a crowd of approximately 450 people attended the annual sale held at the Meat Animal Evaluation Center at the university Sixty bulls graduated from the test station and sold for an average price of $1366 Of the sixty bulls, eight were Simmentals, selling for an average of $1428; eighteen Polled Herefords sold for an average of $1739; seven Charolais brought $1443 on the average; one Limousin bull sold for $1175, and twenty-six Angus averaged $lOB2. The top selling Simmental was consigned by Norman Hughs of Landenberg, Chester County. Glenn Arnold of Waynesburg, Greene County bought the bull for $1975. Metro Temchak, Bellefonte, Centre County, purchased the high selling Charolais bull, consigned by Raymond Bratton, Mc- Veytown, Mifflin County. This bull sold for $lBOO. Of the Angus bulls, Sam bull sale Wyhe, Nottingham, Chester County decided he liked his bull so much he’d buy him and take him along back home for his cows. He consigned and sold the bull to himself for $3400. The Limousin bull was consigned by Joseph Hlatky, Manns Choice, Bedford County, and sold to Lloyd L. Reaver, Gettysburg, Adams County. Bull nominations for the 1981 Performance Testing program will be open from May through August 31,1980. Bulls born between October 1, 1979 and April 15,1980 will go on test from the end of September 1980 through March 1981, with the sale set for the last Friday of March.
