Beechdale Farm sells top-priced Simmental FREDERICK, Md. - Beechdale Farms, Bird-In- Hand, had the top selling purebred Simmental cow at the Sixth Annual Free State Invitational Simmental Sale, held here last Saturday. The only Pennsylvania consignor at the sale, Beechdale Farms’ Becky brought a higher bid than the other 57 head of purbred and part-blood bulls, cows and calves, and heifers from Maryland producers and one purebred cow from Virginia. The Lancaster bred cow will be returning to the county. She was purchased for $2lOO by Russ Raush of Conestoga. Beechdale Farms also consigned a 15/16 Simmental bull to the Maryland sale. Beechdale Vic, calved last December, brought $BOO. This bull calf was the top yearling weight bull in the BIG FARM POWER AND EQUIPMENT ,»' , ■ Maryland bull test out of all the breeds entered. Beechdale Farms also entered a bull in the West Virginia bull test. This animal was the highest selling bull at the tested bull sale in that state. According to Beechdale Farms owner, Dr. Thomas Conrad, they had high hopes for their bull that was en tered at the Penn State bull test station. “He was gaming over 4 pounds per day,” said Conrad, “the highest gaming bull at the test station. Two weeks before the sale, he died rather mysteriously. The University said it was death by unknown causes.” Conrad’s disappointment was eased slightly, he said, when the two top selling Simmental bulls at the Penn State sale were animals bred by Beechdale Farms. Baron Donna sold to Scott Williams, Fmksburg, Md. for $l9OO. The half-blood cow that brought the highest dollar bid was consigned by Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Mat thews, Jr. The cow sold for $9OO and will be traveling to the state of Maine. Little Acorn Farm, Princess Anne, Md. had the top-priced purebred bull at the sale. Bill Miller of Sherwood, Md. bought Langdon’s Elvis, calved September 28,1977, for $350.
