128—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 12,1980 d: Ask the VMD A reader writes: A few neighbors have had coccidiosis in their small goat and sheep herds. At the present, I have about 50 bred ewes and have not had trouble with the disease to date. Bat, if at all possible, I would like to be on the safe side: Is there any vaccination for coccidiosis that I could safely use? Is this disease more of a problem in young animals than adults? Any other information on this would be most helpful. Thank you. Charlotte Lippincott Woods town, N.J. Dr. Sheaffer comments: Coccidiosis in sheep and goats is an infectious disease of the intestinal tract caused by a protozoan parasite. As a matter of fact, there are six species of this protozoan that may be pathogenic for sheep and goats. This culprit is a member of the genus, or family, that goes by the name Euneria. Unfortunately, this disease is more severe in young, growing stock. Adults are less subject to the disease. As I describe the disease symptoms and treatments, keep in mind that what I say for sheep applies equally to goats. A sheep owner usually becomes suspicious that something is wrong when the hind-quarters of the lambs 3®, GAP AUCTION ! v ram hi, m n,n ■ 5:30 P.M. ■ Located otl Route 41 - Lancaster Avenue opposite Turkey * Hill Mintt Market - Cross RR Bridge | ANTIQUES AND HOUSEHOLD GOODS SOLD AT EVERY AUCTION. Further observation will reveal these lambs are depressed and are losing weight. Signs of active coccidiosis include diarrhea, intestinal hemorrhage, along with the weight loss. Coccidosis should not be confused with entertoxemia type D, pulpy kidney disease, which has a higher mortality and affects the animals at a faster rate, your veterinarian will be able to help you to dif ferentiate between the two diseases. One major difference between the two diseases is enterotoxemia can be prevented by vaccinating pregnant ewes three weeks before lambing, and then vaccinating the lambs at four weeks of age with Clostridium perfringens type D toxoid. However, there is currently no available vaccine for coccidiosis. Lambs with a mild case of coccidiosis may have diarrhea and loss of appetite for only two or three days. Some of them will recover spontaneously without treatment. Other lambs will have a severe infection with much straining and a dark, profuse, watery or bloody diarrhea Severe infections require prompt treatment Mortality in the severe group is commonly ten percent or more depending on timely treatment. If the disease has broken ■4 out in your lambs, consult your veterinarian for the recommended therapy The following list of medications have been reported to be effective in treating the disease: sulfaguanidme, sulfameraz ine, sulfaqunoxaline, am prohum, andarsanilic acid. Transmission of the disease is primarily by the contamination of lambs’ creep feed with manure. Creep feeders should be designed so that they can be easily cleaned and dism fected, and readily moved _ from one „ _ -another.. Adult sheep often spread the infection in their manure ! droppings without showing any apparent signs of having the disease. If the lambs’ feed is contaminated with this manure and the eggs of protozoan parasites it contains, the lambs are likely to contract coc cidiosis. I can’t stress enough the or pas _ importance of rotating pastures and feed lots. In addition, the creep feed for your lamb crop should be of adequate quality to supply the needed energy, protein, vitamins (especially vitamin A), minerals and salt. And if treatment becomes necessary, I have found coccidiosis has been suc cessfully controlled in feedlot lambs by feeding one cure PUBLIC SALE OF 360 HEAD LIVESTOCK Located 5 miles North of Chambersburg, Pa. and 5 miles South of Shippensburg, Pa. on Route 11.
