W2—Ussastor Fanriai, Saturday, April 12,19*0 BY JANE BRESEE Staff Correspondent WEST BURLINGTON Denise Andrien of West Burlington, Bradford County, the 1979 Penn sylvania Jersey Cattle Queen relinquished her crown recently. Denise strongly feels that the most important qualities of her successor, Stephanie Kocker, will need are a knowledge of dairying and a love for ttie Jersey cow. For 20 year old Denise, love for the Jersey cow began when she was 11 years old, back in Chester County where she lived with her mom and dad, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Andrien, Sr. and her two brothers, Bruce, Jr. and Lorrin. Her father was not a fanner but a contractor. A neighbor from whom the family bought their milk invited Denise to a 4-H meeting. The next step was to persuade her to take a purebred Jersey calf as a dairy project. Her en thusiasm for the calf spread to her brother, Bruce, and the next year when he was 9, be also took a Jersey calf for his project In no time at all, the play house in the back yard bulged with 4 calves and a bull. The family rented a bam nearby. Mrs. Andnen relates that they vowed at first not to keep any animal large enough to give milk, but when the first one calved, they decided to keep her as a Stephanie Kocker chosen 1980 queen BY JANE BRESEE Staff Correspondent EAST ATHENS - Stephanie Kocker, Man sfield, was crowned the 1980 Jersey Queen at the Jersey breeders’ annual meeting held recently. The next one they could not bear to sell, nor the next ..and so the herd grew. The family finally decided to move out of Chester County and buy a farm in the northeast. They looked a long time, but the minute they saw the place in West Burlington, just off Route 6, between Troy and Towanda, they knew they had found what they wanted. They moved in December, 177 with 33 cows, 19 of which were milking. The whole family has worked hard to put the bams and fences in shape. Denise is proud of the latest accomplishment, a maternity bam with large separate pens. She is pushing her dad hard to fix up the “back bam” for the heifers. Denise graduated from Troy High School in June 1978 and enrolled in Penn State to study to be a veterinarian, a lifelong dream. But she put off going to school because life was too stimulating building up the herd average from 7000 pounds to the present average of 10,325 pounds of milk and 488 pounds of fat Presently she is truly the herd manager with 49 cows, 37 of which are milking and filling all the available stalls m the bam. Angelika Koonz, Fredoma, chairman of the Youth Program, told the audience of 100 Jersey enthusiasts that the queen is the only representative of the Jersey Cattle Club. “The better she is, the better the youth program will be.” she stated. Then Angelika turned the program over to the group’s own Bert Parks alias Bob Dnesbaugh, a veterinarian from Hamburg. involved in can be part of Penn sylvania’s recommendations to The White House Con ference on Families in Baltimore June 5,6, and 7.
