from El
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture has removed El
Salvador’s two meat
slaughtering plants from the
list of approved exporters
that can ship meat products
to the United States.
“The levels of pesticide
residues we detected in El
Salvador’s exported meat
indicate that country has
indicated control over its
chemical residue program,”
Assistant Secretary of
Agriculture Carol Tucker
Foreman said.
“In July last year, El
Salvador voluntarily began
to certify that its meat was
pretested for pesticides and
compiled with our residue
tolerances,” she said “No
violations were found for the
remainder of 1979.”
In February 1980,
however, USDA’s Food
Safety and Quahty Service
reported that excessive
residue levels of chlorinated
hydrocarbons were again
showing up in laboratory
analyses of El Salvador’s
exported meat This
prompted the recent action.
Foreman said product
currently waiting entry into
the U.S will undergo an
intensive laboratory
analysis to ensure no
adultered meat reaches
American consumers.
“We will not permit El
Salvador to ship meat
products to the U S until
