testified during hearings on
the 1981 federal budget
before the U S. House and
Senate Appropriations
Committees Monday and
Tuesday.
Jordan asked that an
additional one million
dollars be directed to the
Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service for in
creased garbage feeding
surveillance and disease

concentrated in high risk
areas such as ship ports and
international airports.
“ASF is certainly a
disease that we are very
concerned about. I feel it is
no exaggeration that this
million spent now could save
billions in the future,”

the estimated return on
investment m swine
research is about 52 percent.
“This is higher than any
other species of livestock
and' is much higher than
most manufacturing firms I
think this just emphasizes
the productive nature of
these programs,” he ex
plained.
Jordan also urged funding
for a comprehensive review
of the need for nitrite in food
processing, the hazards of
eliminating it from food and
the economic impact of
banning it.
