ClS—Lancaster Faming, Saturday, April 5,1980 Several records set for state HARRISBURG - All previous records for returns on Pennsylvania furs were broken during the 1978-79 marketing year, according to final figures compiled by the Game Commission. During the 1978-79 year, licensed raw fur dealers purchased 806,299 pelts taken m the state by trap pers. The figure is higher than the 751,949 taken the preceding year. Declines in the harvests of muskrats, opossums and weasels were recorded, while increases were noted in the harvests of skunks, minks, beavers, raccoons and red and gray foxes. Next on the value list were 392,137 muskrats, which brought $1,874,155.23, an average of $4.78 each. The 26,003 red boxes bought in the Keystone State last year returned $1,461,933.44 to trappers, an average of $56.22 per pelt. This was the highest-priced pelt sold last year. Following were 21,194 gray foxes, which dealers bought for $857,973.21, an average of $40.48 per pelt. Other major items in the sale of furs were 62,631 opossums bought for $193,947.30, an average of $3.10 per skin; 5,266 minks which bought $82,035.90, an average of $15.58 each; 3,184 beavers which sold for $68,289.78, an average of •FARMING • GRAIN HANDLING •CONSTRUCTION .RENTAL YARDS •LANDSCAPING .WAREHOUSES •FERTILIZERPLANTS .STOCKYARDS $21.45 per pelt; and 989 weasels, which returned $538, or 54 cents each. Prior to the 1978-79 marketing year, the record prices paid for Pennsylvania furs were established in 1977- 78, when Keystone pelts brought trappers $7,122,901.23. The figures represent only furs harvested in Penn syvlama by hunters and trappers and bought by Pennsylvania licensed raw fur dealers. Furs shipped or transported out of state by the trapper or held for his or her own use are not included in the tabulations. The tabulations do not include furs marketed during the most recent 1979- 80 furtaking seasons. The value of Pennsylvania furs has changed drastically m the past few years. Prior to 1975, the total fur value never exceeded $3 million. The total value of all Penn sylvania furs ten years ago was $646,646.
