*3B—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, (March 22,1980 “’Dump the dump 9 (Continued from Page Al) the state and all are safe according to DER stan dards. Some of the BCAUSE group take exception to this claim. One of the reasons that the BCAUSE group and others are so irate is because they think the choice for the dump in Ridgebury is a poor one. The proposed area is a natural basin filled with some trees and four or five springs, making it the headwaters of the Wolcott Creek. That stream drains about 1200 acres of water shed before eventually running down 1073 feet into the Chemung River and concurrently into the Susquehanna River. The site also lies near the historic Ridgebury Chapel, one of the oldest Catholic churches in the area, and an old cemetery. Not far downhill is a 50 acre man made lake named Macam with at least 10 homesites around its perimeter. The immediate goal of the well-organized BCAUSE group is to stop DER from issuing a license for this particular dump. They have appealed to other citizens in the county to write letters and voice opposition to it. Organizations who have made public resolutions against the dump are the Bradford-Sullivan County farmers’ Association, the Robert Packer Hospital and Outline Clinic, Diahoga Orange, the Valley Jaycees, the Greater Valley Chamber CONSIGNMENT AUCTION SATURDAY, MARCH 29 9:30 A.M. The latest meeting to further the cause of “Dump the Dump” was held recently in the Patterson Building auditorium -ad jacent to the Robert Packer Hospital. The first speaker was Daniel Ashby, chairman of the BCAUSE group, who said that Act 1, Section 27 of the Pennsylvania Con stitution promises citizens clean air and pure water. Stopping the Ridgebury dump is a natural nght for all citizens, he said. Dr. Ralph Winston, car diologist at the Robert Packer Hospital, one of the many doctors taking op position to the dump, stated that no one really knows what medical problems will result from chemical poisoning from toxic wastes. He also cast doubt on the safety of the dump, saying he fears that in time, leachate would contaminate not only the Ridgebury area, but all other areas touched by the Susquehanna River. Other speakers were Michael Russen, assistant to United States Congressman McDade who has contacted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency which reported that the OER has jurisdiction m this case. He LUNCH promised any assistance possible from his office. Robert Somerville, assistant to Pennsylvania Senator Hager, and a representative of local Assemblyman Roger Madigan, also pledged their support. Another speaker was Bill Chandler, president of the Athens Township Taxpayers League, a group which has worked three years to keep the Northern Tier Solid Waste Authority from putting a damp on a site near Athens. He said he had travelled in four states looking at landfills and has not found one yet that has not leaked. “The public is told ‘don’t worry about it’, but nobody knows for sure what Concern written on her face, Cynthia Ashby, wife of Daniel Ashby, chairman of BCAUSE, a group fighting a toxic waste dump in their neighborhood, listens to Michael Russen, assistant to U.S. Congressman McDade, after a recent public meeting to organize opposition to the dump.
