Letters To
The Editor
Dear Editor:
I would respectfully ask
for the opportunty to com
ment on some of the
statements in your March 1
issue, on the Expo tractor
pull.
I personally an aware of
four large tractor pulling
sleds within the state, with
the Franklin County sled
being one of the three
larger, three-axle types. The
sled which was designed and
contracted for by our club in
late 1975 was, to our
knowledge, the very first of
this type built anywhere in
the world. We are naturally
very proud of that fact—
especially since it embodies
many innovations new to
sled building at that time.
Some of these features are
now in fact required of all
sleds used at National
Tractor Pulling Association
pulls.
I do not concede that any
of these three-axle sleds is
superior to any other, since
dimensions, weights, etc.,
are all relatively similar.
For instance, while we
cannot get the skid on our
sled to float in the air a
garden tractor did make a
full pull with it at the 1377
Gratz fair. The sled was not
transferring weight, ob
viously, and another tractor
nudged the sled to start it
rolling.
Total weight of the sled is
over 58,000 pounds;
maximum transfer to
skidplate is 42,500 pounds. I
know of three other sleds of
this type here in the Eastern
part of the nation, but out
side Pennsylvania.
Our club was particularly
happy to see stock tractors
pulling at Expo ‘BO, as we
proposed the first stock rules
to our state pulling
association. Incidentally,
two of the three classes were
won by our members.
Respectfully,
Eugene Sellers,
Northeast Pa. Tractor
Pulling Club

Dear Editor:
As you may know the
National Beef Research and
Educational Act has failed to
achieve an affimutive vote.
On a State and National
basis the majority of voters
failed to approve the
Beeferendum effort.
However, the industry
debate did bnng to the fore
front issues that are a
challenge to cattle producers
and to consumers. Con
sumers are spending a
smaller percentage of their
income on Beef than ever
before. The debate high
lighted such problems as
“Beef causes cancer”,
“Beef causes heart
disease”, and the increasing
use of Beef substitutes.
The Beeferendum effort
helped the consumer benefit
from more information on
the nutritional value of beef
and more facts countering
the food faddist push of the
vegetarian craze. The
farmer-producer gained
needed information on the
extremes of the cattle cycle
and new ways to expand his
market.
For the industry these
needs are immediate and the
Beeferendum effort may
have sown “seeds of ideas”
for a future harvest.
To those who helped with
their time, energy, and
finances, Isay, “thankyou.”
The Pennsylvania cattle
industry owes you a debt of
gratitude.
To those who felt it
necessary to distort facts
and promote misleading
suggestions, I am sure their
lives and businesses will
reap the implications of their
efforts.
To one and all of my fellow
cattle producers I offer my
hand in friendship and trust
our trails will cross many
times as we strive to im
prove our industry together.
