LANCASTER Riding on
the heels of a banner year,
the Red Rose Baby Beef
Club held its
reorganizations! meeting
Wednesday evening.
A large crowd of hopeful
youngsters and interested
parents gathered at the
Farm and Home Center to
hear last year’s big winner,
Ernie Frey, give some
pointers on shownng suc
cess.
Also included in the
evening’s speakers were
Sam Long, past club
president, Ken Meek,
speaking from the parent’s
viewpoint, and Jason
Weaver summarizing the
leader’s views.
“Attend the meetings with
your child,” stated Meek.
“You’ll find that sometimes
you pick up something your
child misses, and sometimes
he picks up something you
missed.”
Meek also stressed the

the very young members
responsible for care of the
animal and of involving
them in some way in all
aspects of the steer’s care,
even those which they
presently are too young to
handle by themselves.
“Children learn by
example,” said Meek,
“Even though it’s hard at
tunes, leam to accept a
judge’s decision as final.”
And lastly, Meek em
phasized the importance of
halter-breaking the animal
as soon as possible to avoid
some of the problems en
countered as the steer grows
larger.
Weaver noted that par
ticularly for the new
members, the leader is
eager to help. He em
phasized the leader’s role as
coordinator between the
extension office and the club
member.
One of the positive aspects
of involvement in the club
Weaver noted, was the
personal growth and
leadership development he
saw m club members
through their club work.
Max Smith, extension
agent noted that this will be
his 44th year of involvement
with the club.
