through rebuilding ot the
bridge or even possibly the
construction of a better ford,
The group of fanners have
been in continuing contact

municipalities since the
bridge was a county facility,
but the access roads are
maintained by Conoy
Township in Lancaster
County and Londonderry
Township in Dauphin
County.

turned the proposal down
then by lopsided margins.
In Lancaster County 33
producers voted in favor of
the Beeferendum. A
whopping 388 voted against
the program.
A'total of 503 farmers were
eligible to vote in Lancaster
County. The Agricultural
" Stabilization and Con
servation Service recieved
421 ballots. Of those 421, 29
were challenged or post
marked too late to be ac-
cepted.
Other county results in
cluded:

Berks 17 270
Chester „ 26 59
Cumberland 21 f7l
Dauphin 10. 84
Franklin 25 298
Lebanon 13 129
Schuylkill 4 36
York 35 164
At that tune a two-thirds
positive vote was required
for passage. While the
checkoff program was ap
proved by a majority of
those voting nationwide, it
failed to gam the two-thirds
vote needed to become law.
This year’s vote in
Maryland closely resem
beled national trends in the
previous referendum.
The current program
needs only a simple majority
to become reality. Strongest
support should come from
the major cattle producing
states.
Not a single county m
Pennsylvania voted in favor
of the program.
ASCS officials were
handed one report of a
positive county vote in
Pennsylvania, but the
margin was so one-sided in
favor of the program that the
officials rechecked the
count
Upon investigation they
found a clerical error had
transposed the results.
State results will be
compiled in Washington,
