inflations, the unit func
tioned efficiently throughout
the milking process.
The freestall bam is neatly
arranged with hay
feeders along both long
sides. The multitude of white
bodies prompts the question,
“Why do you raise
Saanens?” The reply is,
simple, “We like the white
color.” Opening off of the
side, a neatly fenced lot goes
unused. “We have to force
the does outside even in the
summer,” states Harry. The
three-strand electric fencing
has proved adequate for the
seldom used lot.
Kids are bottle fed until 10
days of age when they are
switched to pan feeding. In
all, they are fed milk a total
of two months. At two weeks
of age, free choice grain and
hay, the same that are fed to
the milkers, are placed in
the kid pens. The
Davidhizars castrate and
disbud all kids, even those
sent to a meat auction. That
way they explain, if they end
up as pets, they’ll be nicer
animals.
Looking over the bam,
they relate a story of earlier
days, when they were still
building. The family arrived
at the bam one morning to
find the goats had unlatched
a gate and spilled a new
batch of feed. Once stuffed
with the grain, they
proceeded to trounce upon a
whole case of new
fluorescent light tubes. The
family laughs about it now,
but the listener gets the
impression they haven’t
forgotten. All gates and
doors are now double
latched.
The family’s hope of a
livelihood from their goats
sometimes seems distant
with their present sales of

are growing.
