He said the White House has not taken sufficient action to protect farmers from economic injury. Victor K. Ray, field ser vices director for National Farmers Union said alcohol fuels production by farmers can be the most significant new market developemnt in the history of farming. He said alcohol production could save the American family farm. Robert J. Mullins, legislative representative for NFU, slammed the Beeferendum calling it “the beef tax.” He said the tax includes no guarantee the promotional program would raise farm income. He said the refund procedure was designed to discourage the small feeder. Mullins said American cattlemen could end up supporting foreign beef under the proposal. He called it a “high flying program that will not help too many people other than some Madison Avenue types.” He drew applause from the audience when he recom mended a “no” vote from all PFU members.
