Ernie bought the cham
pion from his uncle Fred as
this year’s 4-H project.
Three years ago, Ernie
named a 4-H project steer
Road Runner.
“That steer was good for
me, so I decided to try
again,” he explained.
Although hs does not
reside on a farm, Ernie’s
interest in beef cattle and 4-
H began at a young age.
Ernie made frequent visits
to his cousins’ neighboring
farm. As his cousins helped

with the farm chores, so did
Ernie. When they joined 4-H,
so did Ernie.
In preparing for the State
show, Ernie walked Road
Runner a mile or more each
day. He also combed and
brushed the steer.
The large arena was not
new to Ernie. Last year he
showed the reserve
heavyweight champion.
In 1979, his 4-H steer was
chosen as the reserve
champion in the medium
weight competition.
But to Christian Herr, the
large arena steer show was a
new experience. He and his
family are better known as
Dorset sheep exhibitors.
In fact, Christian won a
market lamb class cham
pionship earlier on Thur
sday.
The son of Robert and
Betty Herr, Christian is a
senior and FFA member at
Garden Spot High School.
His FFA projects have in
cluded sheep and swine. This
year he decided he want to
learn more about beef.
His father humorously
commented, “Christian has
always been the black sheep
of the family,” because he
favors swine and beef
showing over exhibiting
sheep.
Christian and his father
traveled to the Rally Farms
in Millbrook, N.Y.
Christian, himself, chose the
Farm Show’s reserve
champion when it weighed
only 300 pounds.
