A3B—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, January 12,1980 HARRISBURG - Members of the Kennard Henley family are ac customed to winning the grand champion trophy in Ayrshire competition, and this year’s event at the Farm Show was no exception. It was a Henley cow that won both the open and junior competitions. At one point, it seemed the Henleys might have to buy a warehouse just to store their Ayrshire awards. They began showing in the early 1960’5, and soon were hauling champion cows to shows all over the East coast and into the Midwest. In 1976, an especially busy year, they competed in 29 shows and came home with 25 grand champion breed awards. Here’s who won apiary awards HARRISBURG - Winners in the apiary products competition were scattered throughout Eastern Penn sylvania. Prize for the top county exhibit went to Montgomery County followed by York and Lancaster County Associations. Several individuals placed samples m the winnings in a number of classes. But Donald Stoltzfus showed his easy-going eight year-old “Penwood Stroke Honey” to the junior championship in a crowded field of Holstems Tuesday afternoon at the Farm Show. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey W. Stoltzfus, Morgantown, in Chester County, Donald competed as a 4-H member. He is a junior m the Twin Valley High School ag program. Donald said he’s been showing since he first got into 4-H a few years ago. Although he and Honey have earned a number of blue ribbons before - she has been Chester County’s 4-H champion - this was the first Farm Show championship for both of them Ayrshire awards go to He rile ys Kennard Henley doesn’t know if that’s a world record or not, but he does know it was a lot of work. And he doesn’t ever expect to be that busy on the show circuit again. “My kids are getting out of school, it’s getting more expensive to haul cows to shows, and I’ve been in the trucking business for the past three years,” Henley said. “But we’ll probably keep on showing five or six timi-s a year.” As they’ve cut the number of shows, the Henleys have also cut the number of cows in their herd, and they’ve moved onto a smaller, 20- acre farm. But the 28 cows they still have are top quality animals, Henley pointed out. He already owns four cows in the 60-cow Stoltzfus herd. His brother Glenn, 13, also helps with the dairying chores, and the nine-year-old twins, Dwight and Duane pitch in oc casionally, too. “Eight really is kind of old for a show cow,” Doanld said. “Most cows are gone by the time they’re this old. She milks out around 18,000 pounds a year, but she never peaked really high. Maybe the fact that she hasn’t overworked herself has helped her to stay around longer. “And she’s strung together a lot of respectable lac tations. That’s helped too.” Wholesale prices of iron and steel used in farm machinery are up 10 percent from a year ago Not just good, but con sistent. This year’s grand champion was the junior champion in last year’s Farm Show. Because they needed a truck to haul their Ayr shires, it was just a short haul for Henley when he went from being primarily an Ayrshire breeder and exhibitor to being primarily a trucker. Now Henley’s sons, Kennard, HI, and William, take care of the farm chores. Most of the work these days revolves around the cows, since the Henley’s buy all their feed. While his family is at home milking, Henley is on the road, delivering mushrooms to places like Abilene, Texas, New Orleans, and St. Light Amber 1 Nathaniel Miller R 3 Dover 2 Hans Spahr Dover Amber 1 Nathaniel Miller VOCATIONAL I Patrick Kalgren Rl Falls Creek 2 Dwayne Frey York Springs Dark Comb Honey 1 Nathaniel Miller R 3 Dover Extracted Honey-Extra Light Amber 1 Dwayne Frey York Springs 2 Jim % . % ~~ ' | 4, IKE FARMERS NATIONAL RANK OF OIMRRWILLE S MC SMALL ENOUGH TO KNOW YOU . ss* fjs LARGE ENOUGH TO SERVE YOU JjK TWO CONVENIENT SOUTHERN LANCASTER COUNTY LOCATIONS WT ★QUARRYVILLE Ph0ne:(717)786-7337 ★ PENN HILL An Equal Opportunity Lender • Member F.D.I.C. • Each Account Insured To $40,000 tiff Louis. It’s a job which, he says, keeps him out sometimes 28 days a month, and which requires even more hours, if that’s possible, than dairying. But while he’s not showing as much as he used to, Henley doesn’t miss many shows. He sometimes plans trips so he can catch a good Ayrshire competition on his way home, meet many of the countless friends he’s made on the show circuit, and catch up on gossip. The only difference bet ween the way things are now and the way they used to be, Henley said, is that the truck is loaded with mushrooms instead of Ayrshires. And he’s finding the mushrooms more profitable than the show circuit.
