C4o—UncasterFarming, Saturday, January 12,1980 Lane, tobacco show, preview to State show LANCASTER - The annual Lancaster County Tobacco Show was held at the Farm and Home Center on January 4. This Friday afternoon show served as a warmup to the state com petition at the Farm Show. Rohrer was the often repeated name as the class placings were revealed. Dawn Rohrer of Lime Valley Road, Lancaster swept the wrapper division. Her first place long wrap pers were chosen champion over Raymond Burkholder’s first place short wrappers. Dawn’s father, Donald Rohrer, said the family raises 10 acres of the Pen nland tobacco. “The tobacco went in wet and didn’t cure very good.” Donald added. It was a tough assignment to select the top quality leaves for the show. Don Rohrer took the first place honors in the short fillers. V Raymond Burkholder took first place and championship in the filler division at the Corn and Tobacco Show held last Friday in Lancaster. The Burkholder’s raise 20 acres of tobacco on the Mann Farm. The judges, Kenneth Mann of the A.K. Mann Tobacco Co. and Harold Sandoe of Agway’s Marketing Division selected the champion fillers because of their body. Filler tobacco should have body and not many blemishes. Eugene Rohrer and his son Mike, of R 1 Strasburg worked together to take four placings with their six en tries. Mike Rohrer out ranked his father’s first place short binders to take the cham pionship in the binder division. Mike exhibited a selection of binders over 26 inches. Jay Frey, Jr. of R 2 Conestoga earned the championship in the filler division. Jim Stauffer of Lancaster swept the 4-H class com petition. Stauffer placed first in both the wrapper and filler classes. The prize money for the county show was made available by the Lancaster Leaf Tobacco Board of Trade. According to Arnold Lueck, “Lancaster is always Lancaster’s steepest competition at the State Show.” The Lancaster County 4-H Com roundup was held in conjunction with the tobacco show.
