HARRISBURG - The
Clyde W. McConaughey, Jr.
Family of Mahoning Creek
Farms, Smicksburg, In
diana County, has been
named Pennsylvania’s
Outstanding Farm Show
Family.
Governor Dick Thorn
burgh congratulated the
McConaughey Family
during Secretary of
Agriculture’s Night, Mon
day, at the Farm Slow.
“An excellent combination
of outstanding farm records,
family participation in
agricultural activities and a
superior record of par
ticipation at the Penn
sylvania Farm Show were
major factors in the selec

USD A suspends
provision of Middle
Adantic order
NEW YORK, N.Y. - A
two-month suspension of a
milk pooling requirement
under the Middle Atlantic
Milk Order has been issued,
the U.S. Department of
Agriculture announced.
P. R. Smith, assistant
secretary of agriculture for
marketing and tran
sportation services, said the
order temporarily suspends
the requirement that a
distributing plant sell at
least 40 percent of its milk
for fluid use before it is
eligible to have all its milk
pooled and priced under the
order.
The suspension will run
from December 1979 through
January 1980.
The suspension was
requested by Michaels
Dames, Inc. The unexpected
cancellation of a contract
with the Dover Air Force
Base in Delaware has
threatened producers
supplying the handler with
loss of pooling status under
the order.
The suspension will afford
the handler time to make
changes in its milk
procurement and/or Class I
sales to remedy its pooling
problems.
In addition the suspension
assures that producers who
regularly supply the market
will continue to have their
milk pooled under the order
during December and
January, allowing them to
share in the returns from the
sale of Class 1 milk.
Smith said that Maryland
McConaugheys named Farm Show family
as Pennsylvania’s Out
standing Farm Show
Family,” said Agricultural
Secretary Penrose
Hallowell.
The McConaughey Family
includes Clyde Jr., his wife
Lois and their three
daughters, Donna, 21, a
registered nurse; Denise, 19,
a student at the Indiana
University of Pennsylvania;
and Darlene, 16, a junior in
high school. Clyde’s parents,
Clyde W. McConaughey, Sr.,
and his wife Hattie are now
deceased.
The McConaugheys farm
503 acres in northern Indiana
County. They raise 35 head
of registered Jersey cattle,
200 head of registered Duroc
swine and ~ r
and Virginia Milk Producers
Association, Inc., supported
the suspension m comments
filed with the department.
No comments opposing the
action were received in
response to the department’s
notice that the action was
being considered.
The suspension order was
published in the December
31,1979 Federal Register.
Whole wheats
top white
breads
HARRISBURG - Baked
goods tend to be uneven in
quality, but this year’s Farm
Show whole wheat bread
entries were marvelous,
according to Lancaster
County home economist
Susan Doyle, baked goods
judge at the 64th Penn
sylvania Farm Show.
Entires in this category
were way up and the
products were superior,
much nicer than the white
bread entries, she noted.
This is somewhat sur
prising because whole wheat
breads are trickier to make
than white breads. They can
easily turn out heavy or dry
if the proportion of whole to
white flour is off.
Doyle said she expects to
see more whole wheat
breads next year.
There's a trend to less
refined foods, she added.
