Donald L. Lake, Big Cove Tannery, took home the ■ ,re S' l4 presented him with a litter of seven
plaque for Grand Champion gilt in the Landrace pigs before she made it to auction.
HARRISBURG Donald
L. Lake, Star Route 2 Big
Cove Tannery, took top
honors in the Farm Show
Landrace competiton.
The Fulton County farmer
showed LDL-Kxngbee, a
home bred gilt, to the blue
ribbon.
She was out of a Canadian
gilt and bred to Dunderbo, a
boar purchased in Colum
bus, Ohio by Lake.
If any of the hogs at this
year’s Farm Show came
under an ultra-critical in
spection they had to be the
animals competing in the
Landrace Show.
Show Judge Gale Bressner
himself had the Grand
Champion Landrace gilt at
this past year’s Illinois State
Brown Swiss breeders hold meeting
INDIANAPOLIS, In. -
Brown Swiss breeders from
across the country recently
wrapped up the 99th annual
meeting of the National
Association.
Activities climaxed with a
record breaking sale.
Earlier in the week, three
of the breed’s outstanding
young dairymen from top
producing herds made up the
program. With the aid of
slides, they spoke on their
total operation set-up and
what they d'd to get the
highest production from
their cows.
Speakers were Roger
Nierman, Long Lane Farm,
Brownstown, Indiana; Jay
Fledderjohann, Johann
Acres, St. Marys, Ohio and
Jack Heller, Lakeshore
Farm, Cecil, Wisconsin. The
three herds all average over
16,000 pounds milk and 700
pounds fat on 80 head or
more
A highlight for many was
to hear Earl Butz, former
Secretary of Agriculture
who was the Annual Meeting
Luncheon Speaker The
crowd enjoyed Bute’s talk,
especially when he referred
‘o Brown Swiss as the
‘Super Cow ”
The 99th Annual Meeting

message from retiring

might be apt to check
Landrace a bit closer than
other breeds.
Bressner had nothing but
good words for Lake’s entry.
The judge said the gilt was
“an extra-good individual
who represents just what we
like to see in a quality
Landrace.”
He said the top hog had a
lot of depth, was free
moving, showed a good
underline, and in general
was a good, sound animal.
Lake said he was quite
pleased with LDL-Kmgbee’s
showing.

The Brown Swiss Bulletin
averaged 8.7% larger in 1979
than in the 1978 fiscal year.
An all-time record was set
with 152 New National
Members in 1979.
During the business
meeting the base dates for
1900 shows were discussed.
In a two to one decision by
attending members and
proxies, it was established
that the membership sup
ported the Board of Direc
tors in their decision to use
September 1 and March 1 for
1900 Brown Swiss shows.
At the close of the meeting
the Board of Directors
presented Bernard Monson

With Lake’s current
farrowing average it’s little
wonder that he has a good
number of hogs at home.
While he keeps 250 hogs on
his farm and 50 gilts, he
figures his sows are
averaging between 12 and 13
pigs per litter.
His weaning average is a
respectable 10.5, he said.
This includes a number of
young gilts with 10 pigs per
litter.
Lake said he was a bit
concerned about the Grand
Champion hog which was
due to farrow right about the
time she was gomg to be
auctioned.
Indiana natives, were on the
program for the Annual
Meeting Banquet. Both
humorists throughly en
tertained the crowd.
The next morning’s
program opened with a talk
on calf raising by Indiana
Extension Dairyman, Norb
Moeller.
The convention crowd then
toured Indiana Brown Swiss
farms by means of a slide
presentation. Sixteen farms
were featured with slides on
their dairy setups. A tour of
the Indianapolis Speedway
and downtown Indianapolis
finished the afternoon.
That night the fourth
Annual National Heifer Sale
was held at the fairgrounds.
At this sale consignors
donate 25 percent of the fust
$lOOO and 15 percent of the
remaining selling pnce to
the National Youth
Programs.
The 21 bred and open
heifers sold averaged $1515.
The Indiana 500 National
Sale concluded the week’s
activities with a flourish
when 50 head sold for an
average of $5470 - a new
breed record
Two bred heifers sold for
$14,000 and $13,500 for a new
breed record in the price of
bred heifers sold at public
auction.
“I hope she has 14 pigs,”
he said.
She was full looking in the
show ring. And a 14 pig litter
would be the crowning touch
for the best Landrace at
Farm Show.
The reserve grand
champion Landrace was
exhibited by Bryan Blatt, R 2
