WHAT’S A TANGELO?
Many consumers wonder
from time to time what kind
of citrus fruit the tangelo is.
Most people assume it's a
cross between an orange and
a tangerine. That seems
logical since it has the
characteristics of both.
Actually, it is a cross bet
ween a grapefruit and
tangerine. It’s orange in
color with a smooth,
somewhat loose skin. Flavor
is more tart than oranges or
tangerines. When choosing
angelos, look for those that
are firm and heavy for their
size with smooth, thin skins.
ABOUT FABRIC
SOFTENERS
Static ding is a winter
annoyance with synthetic
and permanent press
fabrics. It’s both unsightly
and unattractive. It’s also
unavoidable. Adding fabric
softener to your laundry will
give both softness and
fluffiness and reduce static
cling.
•You can choose from two
basic types of fabric sof
teners liquid softener,
which you add to the rinse
cyde, and tear-off sheets
which come on a roll and are
used in the drier. If you don’t
have a fabric softener
dispenser on your washer,
you will probably find the
tear-off sheets more con
venient.
•The tear-off sheet is
basically a carrier of the
softening formulation. You
can get the same effect by
saturating a wash doth in
liquid fabric softener and
adding it to the load in your
drier.
*lt isn’t necessary to use
fabric softener in every
trash load; occasional use is
adequate.
'Control the results of
using liquid fabric softeners
irith careful measurements.
*lf you use softener with
towels, where fluffiness is
desirable but moisture
absorption is important, skip

the use of the fabric softener
occasionally. It reduces
absorption.
*Never add any kind of
fabric softener to a bleach
dispenser or a detergent
dispenser. These features
are not equipped to handle
softeners.
•Although fabric softener
is effective in both hard and
soft water, do not use it in
rinse water containing a
packaged water conditioner.
•Take care not to pour
fabric softener directly onto
fabrics as it may cause
staining. The stains can
attract soil and rust in
water, and you’ll end up with
stains that lode like grease.
*To remove fabric sof
tener stains, wet the area,
rub it with a bar of hand
soap, rinse in warm water,
then wash the entire gar
ment in the usual manner. If
you still see the stain, it may
be from rust. In that case
apply a rust remover.
FURNITURE NEEDS
SPECIAL TREATMENT
IN WINTER
Did you ever sit down in
front of a cozy winter fire
and feel as if the chair was
going to give out? Or heard it
squeak as if it would fall
apart? Strange as it may
seem, the problem is dry air.
Even in these days of
thermostats set between 85
and 70 degrees, the central
beating system in your home
dries out the wood in your
;umiture.
All wood pieces suffer
from dry air. Furniture
joints become loose. Some
varnished or lacquered
finished pieces may even
crack. You can prevent this
damage by adding moisture
to the air. Lots of well
watered plants, may help.
But if your home is quite dry,
you may need to buy a
humidifier. Even a small one
wil help your furniture. But
be careful not to overdo it. If
windows steam up or frost,
there’s too much humidity.
Oft
good condition, choose
window treatments which
will give protection and still
let in some light. Some types
of shutters or blinds filter
light while not cutting it out
completely. A semi-sheer
fabric will do the same thing.
Or you may want to cover
