But this time, I was armed only with a camera and he carried the gun. We went to the State Game Lands in northern Lancaster County after the morning milking was finished. I’ve gone hunting off and on over the past 30 years. In those early years, when I stationed myself on a hillside overlooking a wide area, Fd at least see numerous small herds as they crept through the woods. Often they were completely unaware of my presence and would playnnd nibble quite close to me. With them to watch, I didn’t mind the cold wind, rain and sometimes heavy snow. It was all worth it. But last year I did not see a single deer when we went to Perry County and so I decided not to even purchase a license this year. However, with a little encouraging, I consented to go along for the ride. The weather was beautiful and even a bit too warm for climbing hills as I’d borrowed my son’s heavy underwear. Just standing there with my camera, I found myself following the same pattern as though it were a gun. Quiet! Look! Watch! The first living thing I saw was a pale yellow moth. Next were two Downy Woodpeckers feeding on a tree trunk. They were fun to watch. And then, I think I saw a bird which is usually ATTENTION ! It was almost im possible to see when it sat on the dry leaves of the forest floor. It only flew short distances at a time. Later, while looking over my shoulder, as I leaned against a large ash tree, a tiny bird with a long beak landed 12 inches from my eyes on my tree and slowly pecked his way up the trunk. That shows that I can stand motionless. I took several pictures of fungi on dead cherry trees and later in’ the day one of the dams at Speedwell Lake. We didn’t see any deer but it was nice to have a few relaxing hours away from the farm and share a ther mos of coffee and some turkey sandwiches with my husband.
