During her stay m the States, Niko enjoyed travelling to Chicago and Florida in her free time. She hopes to be able to try snow skiing, one of her favorite hobbies, before she returns to Japan for the New Year. While at the Erb’s, Niko went on her first small airplane nde. Wilbur Erb, a licensed pilot, took her for a bird’s-eye-view of Lancaster County. One of the highlights of the flight was her aerial glimpse of Three Mile Island. Niko is going home with some photographs and a T-shirt of the famous TMI. •• LARRY LEHIGH DOROTHY LEHIGH Owners , fjs N She also took a tour of an Amish poultry farm, and visited Wilbur’s Chocolate Factory in Lititz. Most of her _souvemors were T-shirts, tourist brochures, spoons and record albums. “A lot of the souvenirs m the States are made in Japan or Taiwan, and we can buy the same stuff at home,” Niko said. So, Niko bought blue jeans and shirts instead. The clothes in Japan are much more expensive, she noted. A simple dress can cost $2OO. Before she left the Erb’s on Thursday, Niko prepared a Japanese meal. The traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dishes were traded for a meal of sukiyaki and tempura. The sukiyaki was fried meat, Chinese cabbage, onions, leeks, bean sprouts, Late small game opens Wednesday HARRISBURG - Small game and deer hunters will take to the fields and forests for the final times in 1979 when the late small game and archery and flintlock whitetail deer sesons open on Wednesday, December 26. The tem pura dish was made up of vegetables dipped in batter and deep fried. No desserts were served because the Japanese do not eat sweets. Of all the American dishes that Niko ate during her six month stay, her favorite dish was tuna casserole. She also liked the fancy rice dishes that were served in Louisiana. Eating macaroni and cheese was something different for Niko because the Japanese usually don’t mix foods together and they eat very little cheese. Milk and cheese are thought of as foreign, she said. All told, Niko has bad an exciting and educational experience during her IFYE sylvania and squirrels and grouse statewide. Daily and possession limits for these species are: pheasants, two and four; squirrels, six and twelve; and grouse, two and four. This year the winter season for cottontail rabbits opens on December 26 but closes on January 5. The daily limit on cottontails is four, with a possession limit of eight. 10:00 A.M summer. One of her most memorable times was when she attended the National 4- H Congress. There she met the other 50 IFYE’s from 20 countries. “An African girl said these Americans are crazy...they walk too fast; and, a girl from the United Kingdom said that Americans walk too slow. A French boy said that he missed being able to drink wine; and a German boy said that he missed his beer,” Niko recalled. Niko will be taking back happy memories and in formation that should help her in her career as a Japanese-poultry fanner. And, perhaps more valuable than anything else, she will take along friendships that will last a lifetime. season There will be a single season for hunting snowshoe rabbits (varying hares) this year, opening on Wed nesday, December 26, and dosing on Tuesday, January 1. The daily limit on snowshoes is two, with a season limit of four. Deer of any age or sex will be available from December 26 to January 5 during the archery and flintlock muzzleloader deer seasons. Both archers and flintlock hunters will be able to hunt statewide during the winter season. The late archery season in recent years has been statewide, but prior to 1979 the flintlock season had been confined to designated state and federally-owned lands. A separate archery license and/or a separate flintlock muzzleloader license, available from county treasurers, local issuing agents and Game Com mission field division offices, must be displayed on the regular hunting license during the winter deer season.
