canine birth control drug
which keeps a bitch out of
heat with a daily dosage of

dog’s food or directly into
her mouth.
The manufacturer, The
Upjohn Company, did 10
years of testing on well over
2,000 dogs m both field
situations and laboratories.
No adverse effect on
livability were found, nor did
any life-endangering side
effects appear, according to
research Dr. James
Sokolowski.
One hunter who par
ticipated in the field tests
was Justin R. Kromimnga of
Kalamazoo, Michigan. He
started his Brittany Spaniel,
Babe, on Cheque in 1972, and
continued administering the
birth control drops through
her reproductive years.

decided to start Babe on the
birth control drug after six
years of untimely heat
periods and periodic
episodes with false
pregnancy.
Kromminga believes that
an unspayed dog is a better
hunter. “The biggest factor v
affecting hunting ability
must be related to natural
instincts and I can’t help but
feel that removal of
reproductive organs just
might negatively affect
these instincts,” he says.

to the problems faced by
owners wanting to enter
their bitches into com
petitive events, because the
serious dog owner doesn’t
want an element of un
certainty to hang over his
animal’s performance.
