Assistant ag secretary asks wood conservation SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The United States must learn to conserve wood, rather than increase timber production, if there is to be enough wood to meet society’s future needs, Assistant Secretary of Agriculture M. Rupert Cutler said. “Today’s natural resources are becoming scarcer and more difficult and costly to extract,” Cutler said. “Now and in the future it may well be cheaper to conserve than to produce additional resources. We must restructure our policies to address these new realities. “We must deliberately seek to hold down the rise in demand for raw ■'timber by meeting consumer demand more efficiently,” he said. “We can do this by in creasing the recovery of wood fiber in high-value products, by improving the efficiency in using wood products for construction and other purposes, and by developing wood fiber recycling systems to reduce LU g> # 0 co 5 5 > fS CM r o> + V - -5 ” si •“ r N Q ■§ CM CM T Q- K - cS 1 R (StfSJfc 0)£ ys> ? « X CM < v C gi-gyi W CC a I- 3 •Q f-- T- — » £N i»Q >■ c\j < £ h - S Q D -a *C 1«« S £ cnDr-0.1 o> OC - 2 « r** j- 2 £ O £ * g «5 o r lO CO « ? 00 + + [R E I >^isS x to i a> hI" r CO Olinf* (O - o > O >» 0) o' r" w *2 co m T g ■*— Q) _*, C s = ° < i= SgQj< 1 io *■ it O) D o CL X / ° Q j *.
