Pink rot
NEWARK, Del. - Pink rot
of potatoes has been a peren
nial problem for many
potato growers in Delaware.
Some years yield losses have
been estimated at about five
per cent. Some growers have
had higher losses. “Present
ly," says University of
Delaware extension plant
pathologist Bob Mulrooney,
“we have no control
measures except rotation for
this soil-borne fungus.”
Resistant varieties are being
sought, but so far none have
been a factor in reducing the
damage from pink rot. Two
researcners at the Universi
ty’s Agricultural Experi
ment Station are also looking
at cover cropping practices
which might discourage
winter survival of the
pathogen. The possibility of
cbeimical control is being in
vestigated, too.
This summer Mulrooney
tested a new experimental
fungicide from Ciba-Geigy
called Ridomil (formerly
CGA-45968) on a plot of
potatoes grown on the
University farm in Newark
under an experimental use
permit
This systemic fungicide
was applied in several ways:
2 lbs. active ingredient per
acre in granule form at plan
ting; Vz lb. per acre applied
three times during the grow
ing season as a foliar spray;
and 2 lbs. per acre applied
two weeks prior to harvest
as a foliar spray. An un
treated check plot was also
included in this extension
demonstration.
All the plots were in
oculated with the pink rot
pathogen when plants were
approximately six inches
tall.
At barvesttime the
Ridomil-treated plots where
three aplications were used
were significantly better
than the untreated plots,
reports Mulrooney. Mean
percentage of infection for
the untreated check was 7.3,
while the mean was only 1.4
for the plot where fungicide
was applied three times at
the % pound rate. However,
there were no significant
yield increases.
“I’m excited to see a new,
effective fungicide like
Ridomil being developed,”
says the specialist. “It looks
like it could be of help to our
potato growers and hopeful
ly it won’t be long before it
becomes commercially
available.”
Pink rot is a difficult
disease to assess because in
fected tubers can’t always
be identified at harvest.
Potatoes showing no symp
toms can be graded, packed,
and shipped, only to
deteriorate on the way to
market. Unknown numbers
of truck loads have been
dumped because of such
disease problems in transit.
