don’t read them. They
usually don’t even think
about them until the freezer
breaks down or the range
doesn’t heat up or the sewing
machine sews only what it
chooses.
Then comes a hectic and
often unsuccessful hunt for
the warranty certificate. To
complicate matters still
further, many manufac
turers require proof of date
of purchase, such as a sales
shp.
For peace of mind,
establish a system whereby
warranty certificates are
filed right along with the
appropriate sales slip. A
manila envelope, a standard
file folder, a section of a
drawer or even an old shoe
box will suffice.

when the culprit is really
consumer misuse.
This misuse can be
inadvertent. For example, a
few years ago many families
had clothes dryers with
clogged filters and other
problems. Manufacturers
refused to repair the ap
pliances under the warranty.
The reason? The problems
were caused by use of an
aerosol spray fabric sof
tener, no longer on the
market, rather than from
any defect in the material or
workmanship of the dryer.
It’s unfair to expect
manufacturers to repair
products that fail due to our
misuse or our failure to read
the use and care materials
the manufacturer provides
with the product.
If we want manufacturers
to honor their warranties, we
should do our part by using
the products as directed.
