—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 1,1979 96 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Judging in the 4-H and FFA department started out at a less frantic pace at this years’s ninety-eighth Maryland State Fair in Timonium, as a first-ever Saturday opening gave one extra day in the activity schedule. The 4-H dog obedience and grooming show was held Saturday morning in the year-old Cow Palace arena. It was followed in the af ternoon by the sixth annual 4-H bicycle contest at the same location- - - Sunday’s competitive events included a 4-H and FFA rabbit show, unwashed lamb fitting and showing contest, ladies lead (sheep). Pretty Cow contest and dairy steer show. There was also a 4-H rabbit judging contest. The always large 4-H horse and pony show got under way for its annual four-day run in the lighted outdoor arena next to the new Exhibition Hall at the west side of the fairground. Marie Traband, 16, of Forest Hill, Harford county, easily outdistanced all competition to ride away with the senior cham pionship for 14 to l&-year olds in the 4-H bicycle contest at this year’s Maryland State Fair in Timomum. He had been junior champion at the state fair in 1977. Seniors (ages 14-19) Ruth Ellen Easterday, Frederick; Robin M. Martin, Hampstead; Mark Traband, Forest Hill; Alex Hirtle, Westminster; and Bryan Diehl, Cumberland. Traband was senior champion. Susan Brown, 17 of Arnold was named best handier in the fitting and showing class for dogs of all ages. She had won the senior open class at the 1977 state fair and the senior novice class in 1976.
