—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 1,1979 86 Ida’s Notebook Ida Risser And now to tell you a bit more about our trip through Kentucky and Virginia. One of the houses which I enjoyed visiting was way out in the country near a place called Crab Orchard, Kentucky. We probably wouldn’t have stopped to see The William Whitley House if I hadn’t been driving. But driving, driving wasn’t my idea of a vacation-one day we drove 560 miles from Tennessee to our home. Anyway, this was the first brick house built about 1790 that was “west” of the Alleghenies. Kentucky was organized in 1776 as a county of Virginia. At that time raids by northern Indians made life in the “western country” a dangerous ad venture. This particular house had a small room in the center of it that con tained no windows but had a fireplace and a small stairway to the attic. We were shown an opening in the attic floor where the children could be hidden in an Indian attack. Col. William Whitley who built the house was a pioneer scout and Indian fighter. At one point he had been given 10,000 acres for winning battles and he traded some MIH*S ★ GAS RANGES ★ COAL HEATERS ★ COAL-GAS COMBINATIONS ★ COAL-ELECTRIC COMBINATIONS if GAS GRILLS * GAS REFRIGERATORS 5 Featuring... Whitley died in Canada in 1813 and he was still fighting Indians. Besides seeing the old fort at Harrodsburg, Ken., we also saw the log cabin in which Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks were married June 12, 1806. Abraham Lincoln’s parents cabin is now sheltered in a huge bnck building. The cabin itself is one small room which appears to be dominated by a hugh rough hewn bed. There was very little other furniture. In contrast, nearby was a huge mansion built by Major James Taylor in 1830 and which now houses an in teresting museum. To break the monotony of driving, we did take a walking tour of Lexington, Virginia (we had to conduct it ourselves or else wait three hours), and we also stopped at the Strasburg Museum in Virginia. It contained a bit of everything from Indian artifacts and Civil War relics to blacksmith and potter shops. 36 HW (Coal-Wood) 36” COAL - GAS RANGE QjVomm I ■ Societies I Berks Co, Society 5 The August meeting of the Berks County Farm Women Society 5 was held at the home of Mary Troutman, Myerstown, RDI.
