24—UncasterTarmint, Saturday, September 1,1979 EPA restricts pesticide uses NEWARK, Del., - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) has recently classified certain uses of 36 pesticides for restricted use, and has proposed such classification for 18 others. The E.P.A. classifies a pesticide “for restricted use” when the agency decides the directions on the label are not sufficient to protect humans or the en vironment from barm if the chemical is used by un trained hands. Only certified applicators are permitted to use such restricted products. Persons who need to use pesticides may undergo special training to become certified applicators. In Delaware about 1800 growers are certified as private applicators, and about 400 persons are cer tified as commercial ap plicators. To help you avoid these mistakes, here are some laundering tips. Absolute no-no’s - No Levis mixed with delicate fabrics. -Don’t jam everything into one wash load. Clothes need room to move and flex in the tub. -Don’t mix dark colors with whites, unless you’re really fond of the “dingy gray” shade. -Don’t pour bleach or fabric softener directly onto clothing in the washer. Direct contact with bleach can cause white splotches on your colored items and holes in others. Direct contact Furadan with 40 percent or greater concentrations; liquid Disyston; liquid Mocap; liquid Nemacui; liquid Dyfonate; and liquid Thimet. Pesticide uses recently proposed for restricted', use classification include: Temik granules with ten percent or greater con centrations; Furadan granules with two percent or greater concentrations; carbon disulfide ( = bisulfide) for grain fumigation or rat and woodchuck control pur poses; Dyston granules with ten percent or greater concentrations; Mocap granules and fertilizer mixtures with greater than three percent concentration; Nemacur granules-with ten percent or greater con centrations; Dyfonate granules with five percent or greater concentration; Monitor liquids containing 40 percent or greater con centrations; greenhouse with fabric softeners can leave colored blobs on white clothing. Absolute Do’s - Sort and separate clothing items by color, fabric and weight. -Pre-treat stains before washing. -Do use enough detergent. Follow the manufacturer’s suggestions on the package. -Always check for washing instructions on the garment label. -Do your laundering fairly often, or you may find “dif ficult to remove” soils and stains have turned into “im possible to remove” stains. Neither of these listings is complete, so growers should be sure to check labels on pesticide products. Complete listings appear in the August 1,1979, Federal Register, which is available in many libraries. The list of classified uses appears on pages 45131-45133, while the proposed list appears on pages 45218-25224. The comment period on the proposed classification ends October 1,1979.
