QUAKERTOWN - The
Bucks County Farmers
Association and the
Cooperative Extension
Service invite the pubhc to
participate in an Open Farm
Tour on Saturday, Sep-
tember 8. There will be eight
places in the county that will
- be open to visitors from 10-4
p.m. The association urges
urban neighbors to visit with
farm families and leam
mor. about the industry.
l? ollowing is a brief
description of the farms and
agricultural businesses that
are participating in the day.
The Quakertown
Veterinary Clinic, on the Old
Bethlehem Pike has three
practicing veterinarians.
The clinic features X-Ray
and diagnostic facilities. The
veterinarians treat small
animals at the clinic and
large animals on farms.
The number two spot is the
farm of Isaac Geissinger and
Sons. This farm is located at
the Old Bethlehem Pike and
Grant Road. They milk 200
cows m a carousel parlor
and farm 900 acres of crops.
They retail eggs from 12,000
laying hens and produce
capons.

A carousel milking parlor
is used to milk 145 cows on
the Keyser Brothers farm of
Brick Tavern Road. This
farm features Harvestore
silos and a liquid manure
system. The Keyser brothers
farm 650 acres of grain and
hay crops.
Windy Springs Farm is
located on Myers Road near
Stemburg Road and features
200 sows and piglets. There
are thirty steers fattened in
a year from a brood cow
herd. Wilmer Mood, owner
of the 650 acre farm, also
sells snowmobiles.
The fifth location par
ticipating m the open farm
tours is the Philip Rosen
berger farm at Weiss and
Bauman Road. They milk 45
cows with a pipeline milker.
Heifers are kept in a free
stall barn and 300 chickens
are raised. The Rosen
berger’s board 13 horses and
give riding lessons.
Custom grinding and
miring of livestock feed
takes place at the sixth stop
of the Bucks County tours.

All visitors will be interested
in seeing the machine
harvest of sweet com and
how the com is graded for
the retail market.
A real specialty of the tour
will be a visit with a retired
farmer, Thomas White, of
Tollgate and Trum
bauersville Roads. This
location features 100 doe and
young rabbits of which the
young are raised for meat.
White is also a beekeeper.
The Bucks County Open
Farm tour is sure to have
something that will interest
everyone. Maps and in
formation about the par
ticipating farms will be
available at each location.
Visitors are welcome to visit
farms of their choice.
The New York Aquarium
boosted attendance
markedly when it launched a
search for a “bargain
monster,” reports the
August Reader’s Digest. The
aquarium wanted a
creature that was both
unusual and economical to
catch. The answer: a giant
sea roach called
Bathynomus giganteus, a
common monster 60 million
years ago but comparatively
rare today. After a search
team delivered six of the
creatures to the Aquarium,
admissions soared, even in
the dead of winter.
