Not Responsible For Accidents,
Visitors to Ag Progress
Days will see potato hybrids
evaluated for resistance to
injury from air pollution.
These plants were grown
from “true seed” produced
by crossing commercial
varieties tolerant or
susceptible to ozone, a highly
toxic air pollutant.
“Potatoes from this field
will be used in greenhouse
experiments testing plants
for resistance to ozone,” Dr.
Cole explained. “It is hoped
that genetic information
from this study will enable
potato breeders to in
corporate ozone resistance
into varieties having other
favorable characteristics.”
The ozone research is
carried out by Neal E. De
Vos of Montville, NJ,
graduate assistant in hor
ticulture, in association with
Dr. Eva J. Pell and Dr.
Richard R. Hill.
Elsewhere, visitors will
see potato hybrids produced
from crosses between
commercial varieties and
strains imported from South
America. When the com
mercial potatoes are the
female parent, the hybrids

usually are sterile, Dr. Cole
said, so the commercial
potato generally is used as
the male. Visitors will see a
test to determine the best
crosses.
The above experiments
are directed by Dr. Paul
Gran, assisted by Jack E.
Staub, graduate assistant in
horticulture. Their studies of
first generation backcross
progenies will also be seen.
Threats
export control
revived
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Efforts to amend the Export
Administration Act (H.R.
4034) have revived threats of
U.S. farm export controls.
Farm groups are opposing
these moves, as well as
specific proposals for cur
bing wheat, flour, and hide
exports. NCFC is concerned
about attempts to weaken
the Secretary of
Agriculture’s role in
determining if and when
increased exports no longer

The purpose is to breed
