New queens selected for Red Rose 4-H club

LANCASTER The Red Rose 4-H Baby
Beef and Sheep Club has two new queens.
They were selected during a meeting at
the Farm and Home Center on Wednesday
evening.
Reigning as the new Junior Queen is 11-
year old Emily Weaver, daughter of Mr.
.and Mrs. F. Roy Weaver, Ephrata Rl.
The new Senior Queen is 17-year old
Sarah Brubaker, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Clyde Brubaker, Harrisburg Pike,
Lancaster.
In order to be selected queen, con
testants must first be nominated by other
members of the club. A panel of judges
then makes the final selection based on the
girls’ presentations and poise.
The two girls will represent the Red
Rose 4-H Baby Beef and Sheep Club next
month in a contest on Achievement Day at
which time a 4-H queen will be chosen for
all of the Lancaster County 4-H Clubs.
Miss Weaver, who is in her third year in
4-H, narrowly edged Chns Chapman of
Manheim R 5. She is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. John Chapman.
Runner-up in the senior queen selection
was 14-year old Yvonne Eshleman,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Eshleman,
Lancaster R 2.
The new senior queen, Miss Brubaker, is
a tall brunette who will be a senior at

Hempfield High School this Fall. She is an
accomplished 4-H’er, having participated
m numerous local, regional, state, and
national activities. She is at home on a 56-
acre beef and sheep farm on the outskirts
of Lancaster. In her eighth year as a
member of the Red Rose 4-H Baby Beef
and Sheep Club, Miss Brubaker recently
returned from an exchange experience
program in Wisconsin.
“I believe 4-H is the best program of
fered to today’s youth, and I’m glad I got
involved,” she told the audience on
Wednesday evening after having recited
some of her accomplishments and ex
periences.
Her past activities mclude beef, sheep,
and hog projects. She has participated m
State Capital 4-H Days, 4-H Leadership
Congress, and was a former co-president
of the County Council. She has been in
volved on many committees, and
displayed an m-depth knowledge of the
organization and its functions.
An exceptionally poised young lady, the
17-year old 4-H queen has met with Penn
sylvania’s Secretary of Agriculture
Penrose Hallowell, as well as his
predecessor, Kent Shelhamer. She con
siders the 4-H procedures and events as
having been very educational, rewarding,
and enjoyable.

judging team in the state Her ac
complishments and attitude have helped
her to become a teen leader m the club.
Last year she received the Outstanding
Teen Leadership Award.
In additioon, Miss Brubaker has been
involved with community service projects.
She credits the 4-H program for much of
her knowledge of livestock and expressed
ambitions to work with livestock in the
future.
Runner-up for the senior queen title,
Yvonne Eshleman, 14, has had her talents,
interests, and poise carry her to an ap
perance before a television audience. It
came about through her local Penn Manor
Community Club when she was one of the
top three finalists m a talent contest.
Miss Eshleman has also attended
Leadership Congress and considers the
friends she has made in 4-H as one of the
highest benefits of the program. She ad
vises younger members, and those con
sidering 4-H, to become involved in all
phases of the program.
“Four-H is a great experience - you can
make lots of new friends, that’s the
greatest part. Learning is one of the many
benefits, especially finding out about
responsibility. Four-H is fun, it’s lots of
work, but usually very enjoyable,” the
young lady commented.

The young 4-H queen is at home on a 20
acre farm. Steers are her mam projects

much as I can in 4-H and do everythin!
possible,” she added.
Twelve-year old Chris Chapman has
sheep, hogs, and sewing projects to keep
her solidly in the 4-H program. Aside froir
her activities with the Red Rose Baby Bee!
and Sheep Club, she is also active in the
Elm-Penryn Community Club. She ns
to compete at the Manheim Fair.
“Being a member of 4-H has meant
plenty of learning, new acquaintances, and
good times. It’s a great experience, the
runner-up junior queen exclaimed.
Emceeing the evening program were
Sam Long of Peach Bottom and Tony
Eberly of Ephrata
heifers in the milking barn-producmg
months ahead of many other heifers.
