Internal parasite control essential for sheep

sheep have internal
parasites,” Mike Fournier,
Extension county agent for
Bucks County stated. “It’s
up to you to decide how to
handle the problem.”
Speaking at the special
sheep seminar held last
Saturday at Delaware
Valley College, he related
that internal parasites are
the chief disease problem of
Pa. sheep. He told that a
basic understanding of the
conditions which foster the
development of flock
parasite problems is

learn how to manage sheep
on their farms so that the
worms are kept undei
control with a minimum of
labor and medicine.
Fournier told his audience
that there are several dif
ferent kinds of internal
parasites which can infect
sheep. These include
nematodes- stomach and
intestinal roundworms and
lungworms; cestatodes
tapeworms; trematodes
flukes; and protoyoa

the two worms most
prominent are the round
worms and the tapeworms
And in certain areas,
lungworms are also a
problem
To combat the worm
problems, several drugs are
used. Most can be purchased
at feed stores or .blamed
through catalogues.
Each drug has a specific
purpose in the worming
program and the drugs
should be used in com
binations to assure that all
worms are treated
The drugs Fournier told of
for use against internal
parasites included:
Thiabendayole, a drug
used mainly to control
stomach and intestinal
roundworms; it is effective
and safe even when over
dosed
Tramisol, the only drug
effective against lungworm,
it is also effective against
stomach and intestinal
roundworms.
Phenothiazine, which has
not been used as much since
thiabendayole development,
it is used for stomach in
testinal roundworms.
Haloxon (Loxon), an
organic phosphate drug that
is relatively safe and highly
effective against stomach
and mtestinal roundworms
Copper Sulfate-Nicotine
Sulfate Solution, too toxic
for young lambs or weak
emaciated sheep, it has
some effect on tapeworms.
Lead arsenate, very
dangerous and very difficult
if not impossible to obtain, it
