DUSTING LABOR
For control of lice
on beef and dairy cattle
Cattle lice are a major economic problem in the
United States. The U.S.D.A. estimates annual
economic losses at between $45 and $5O million.
This irtdudes reduction of weight and lowered
milk production. All breeds, sexes, and ages of
cattle are susceptible. Lice are present on cattle
throughout the year, but seldom reach damaging
populations except during late fall to early spring.
Cattle that have heavy infestations, often have
poor feed conversion and are subject to other
problems because of their weakened condition.
Heavily infested animals lose their appetites, rub,
bite, and kick the irritated itching skin. The
animals become weak and inactive with anemia
developing. Young calves may become stunted to

the point that they will tail to respond to in
creased feed or milk supply. The visible mem
branes of the eyes, mouth, and vulva are pale
because of the anemia. In addition to the nervous
irritation of the animal, a reduced red blood cell
count can result in poor feed utilization and a
lowered white corpuscle count can mean less
natural disease resistance. As a result of heavy
infestation during the winter, growth rates decline
and death from secondary infection such as
pneumonia may result.
Unlike flies, lice do not migrate or move readily
from one herd to another. They stay on the host
animal and, due to the nature of their life cycle,
two treatments can break the reproductive cycle.
The first SELF treatment with Anchor FLIP TOP
DUST BAG early in the fall, kills adult lice.
A later SELF treatment (through forced or semi
forced use) will kill any young lice that hatch from
eggs in the hair coat at the time of the first treat
ment. Additional SELF treatments will stop
infestation.
