As a part of the afternoon
activities, the top placing
apple pies in ,the festival
were auctioned off.
A special apple pie baked
by the Apple Queen, Kristel,
was sold'for $l6 and bought
by her father Earl Shutt,
who acted as emcee for the
day’s events.
The first placing pie baked
by anil year old or younger,
was made by Julie Taylor,
Biglerville Rl, a fourth
grader, and the pie went for
$ll.
In the 12 to 18 year old
division, the first prize pie
was baked by Jennfer
Sbowtize, the 1978 Apple
Queen. It brought $l6 under
the auctioneer’s gavel.
And in the 19 year old and
up division, Mrs. Jeffrey
McCleaf, Asper Rl, bad the
top pie, which sold for an
unheard of $42.
All three top pies were
bought by a representative
of Glenn’s Family
Restaurant, Biglerville.
In the $42 pie bidding,
second high bidder was
Secretary of Agriculture
Penrose Hallowell.
Auctioneer for the event
was David Redding of
Gettysburg.
Throughout the day bus
tours of the Apple Blossom
area of the county continued.
Freemovies were shown and
pie eating and apple bobbing
contests wree held. Craft
exhibits and apple desserts
were available to the public.
According to area apple
orcbardists, the apple trees
in the Adams County area
showed a “good bloom’ this
year, and as of last Sunday,
the farmers were holding

their breath that the frost
was over. They said that
there was a very good
potential for an excellent
harvest this year.
Those involved with the
Apple Blossom festival
termed the attendance at the
event as very good, with a
high number of people on the
grounds. They wished to
thank everyone for their help
and cooperation.
