Md. Lamb and Wool Queen

WESTMINSTER, Md. -
Elizabeth Rogers Hides,
better known as ‘Rog’, of
Whitakers Mill, Joppa, Md.
was named the new
Maryland State Lamb and
Wool Queen on May 6. The
contest was held in con
junction with the Maryland
Sheep and Wool Crafts
Festival held at the
Agricultural Center in
Westminster, Md.
Rog has been raising
sheep for the past six years.
Her flock consists of 20
Hampshire, comercial and
black sheep ewes. She does
all her own shearing,
veterinarian work, fence
repairing, and nutrition
planning.
She is a member of the
Harford County 4-H
Livestock Club, Harford
County Sheep Breeders
Association along with the
Maryland Sheep Breeders
Association. She is an active
junior leader in her 4-H Club
and will be an assistant
leader in the Fall.
Active in all phases of
sheep raising, Rog does her
own spinning, weaving and
knitting. She said she keeps
her better fleeces for herself
to spin. “I really like the
wool breeds, although the
real value is in the meat
animal” she said. With this
in mind, Rog added that she
would like to work with
Crossbreeding to get better
wools on a meater animal.
4-H achievement night held
PINE GROVE - The
Schuylkill County 4-H
Achievement Night Contest
was held April 27, at the Pine
Grove Area High School.
This event consisted of
judging demonstrations and
public speeches of individual
members and also team
competitions in Junior and
Senior 4-H Horse Bowls.
Pitman 4-H Club received
an award for the highest
percentage of club members
participating in the event for

Newly crowned Maryland State Lamb and Wool
Queen Elizabeth Rogers Hicks, better known as
‘Rog', has been active in raising sheep for the last
six years.

Marilyn Jusinski, all 4-H
leaders; and Chris Tallman.

the daughter of William and
Elizabeth Hicks, If.
Rog will be teaching art at
an elementary school three
days a week, and taking art
courses at Antioch College,
Columbia, and Townson
-State.
Eighteen year old Rog is
looking forward to going to
the county fairs she will be
attending. “I am really
interested in promoting the
sheep industry and helping
to educate the public” she"
said. “I would like to help
promote the Sheep and Wool
Crafts festival” and “maybe
set up a festival in the
Harford County area.”
