Agway, one of the first major feed manufacturers
to add selenium to dairy and livestock feeds follow
ing FDA clearance in January, is now including this
vital nutrient in milk replacers and mineral mix
tures.
“This means that the problems of selenium defi
ciency in our region - actual or marginal - will be
greatly reduced or eliminated,” said Or. J. W.
Peters, Agway animal nutritionist.
The most widely recognized symptom of selenium
deficiency is “white muscle disease”, according to
Dr. Peters. It is characterized by muscle deteriora
tion, usually first observed as paralysis of the hind
legs. In severe cases, death results from liver
damage and heart failure. Another problem
associated with marginal-to deficient intake of
selenium in dairy animals Js lower fertility and
retained placenta.
Symptoms of marginal selenium deficiency are

deficient animal, however, will often show an
improvement when selenium is supplemented.”
