The award is given to any member who has either as an individual or a family, shipped milk to the cooperative for 50 con tinuous years. Over the past 50 years these dairymen and their families have experienced many changes in the dairy industry. They have seen the size of their herds grow while many of their neigh bors went out of business. They have new machines that make the work easier, although for most, that just means more timne for more cows. The changes are too numerous to list, but these people have made the best of them. Loving the good times and living with the bad. A half century ago milk marketing was an every man-for-himself proposition. Cans were delivered to the local railroad siding where dairies picked them up if they wanted them or left them to sour in the day’s heat. There was no equitable pricing system between producers or for that matter for any given producer for his day-to-day deliveries. Efforts begun several years earlier resulted in the founding of the Maryland State Dairymen’s Association and brought at least a start to more orderly marketing of milk. Seven teen years later, the MSDA officially changed its name to Maryland Cooperative Milk Producers. The name changed but the purpose remained the same and many of the men and women who were the founding and early members of the MSDA were there to continue to guide the new cooperative in its current role as the largest Maryland-based milk marketing organization. Today, due in large part to the efforts and loyalty of members like the Hulls, Doves and Heines, MCMP has over 1,000 members and is recognized as a leader in the production of high quality milk.
