MURRAYSVILLE - The
Pennsylvania Shorthorn &
Polled Shorthorn Breeders’
Association held its annual
meeting at Little Tony’s
Restaurant, Murrysrille, on
March 3. Officers re-elected
to serve the 1979 term were:
President, James W. Fogal;
Vice-president, Harry
Foulk, Mercer; Secretary
treasurer, Mr. and Mrs.
Richard C. Peoples, Volant.
Directors elected to serve
for a three year term were:
Bradley Eisiminger,
Waynes burg; Harry Foulk,
Mercer; George Hunter.
Stoneboro and Philip Dunn,
Huntingdon. Nadine Butler,
Clinton, was appointed to
serve on the board of
directors as a voting Junior
Director for one year.
Plans were finalized for
several events for the
coming year. The 1979
Pennsylvania Shorthorn
Spring Show and Sale will be
held on Saturday, May 5, at
USDA invites proposals
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Beef
producers and the public
have until April 5 to submit
their views to the U.S.
Department of Agriculture
on what kind of beef
research and promotion
program should be
developed.
P.R. Smith, assistant
secretary of agriculture,
said the department has
already received one
proposal from a beef in
dustry group. He said the
public can suggest changes
in the industry proposal or
submit other proposals.

during the program’s

Shorthorn meeting held
the Mercer County 4-H Park,
Mercer, Pa. The Show,
scheduled for 3 p.m. will be
judged by Greg McKean of
Penn State, followed by the
sale at 7 p.m. The auctioneer
will be Charles Behm, Wind
Ridge. With consignments
from breeders in Penn
sylvania and Virginia, an
excellent offering of quality
cattle is expected.
Hie 1979 Pennsylvania
Shorthorn Field Day is
scheduled for Sunday, July
29 at the McElhaney Stock
Farm, Hookstown. Hosts
will be Kay, Dick, Dave and
Diana McElhaney.
The 1979 State Shorthorn
Show will be held at the
Lawrence County Fair, New
Castle. Judging of the
Shorthorn cattle is scheduled
for Thursday, August 16th at
5 p.m.
Nadine Butler and Eric
Peoples thanked the
Association for their help
and support in providing
development. Any program
must be approved by a
majority vote of beef
producers in a national
referendum.
A 1976 law authorized a
program to develop and
improve markets for cattle,
beef and beef products.
Smith said a program
proposed in 1977 did not
receive two-thirds approval
for passage, even though 56.4
per cent of those voting
fa wired it. A 1978 amen
dement to the act permits a
program if a majority of
registered voters approves
it.

MEADOWLANDS - Plans
are being finalized for the
Annual Meeting and Calf
Sale of the Pennsylvania
Jersey Cattle Club, to be
be financed with
assessments of up to one-half
of one per cent of the value of
each animal slaughtered,
with provision for producer
refunds. The program would
be administered by a board
of up to 68 producers
members, appointed by the
secretary of agriculture.
