According to Lancaster County Extension Director Max M. Smith, the program may also be of interest to rural, non-farm residents owning just a few head of livestock, poultry, or a few acres of land. Greenhouse and such nur sery products as sod, mushrooms, greenhouse vegetables, cut flowers, and bulbs are also on the list as farm and ranch products. Any commercial producer of these commodities should fill out a census report form. Bureau officials also remind farm operators that the quicker report forms are returned to the Bureau the less it will cost in follow-up work to complete collection of census data. The topics which will be discussed at various workshops include crops and soils;dairy cattle and goats; livestock; poultry and rabbits. After a welcoming message from County Agent Smith, the first workshop will begin and last until 10 a.m. the second workshop commences shortly thereafter. At 11 a.m. there will be a general session on tax planning, pest control, record keeping, and testing services. The progam ends at noon. Visitors to the Part-Time Farmers’ Seminar will have the opportunity to participate in two 45-nunute workshops. Each workshop will be offered twice. Smith asks that each interested person indicate the two workshops of their choice on the preregistration form. In the dairy and goat session, coordinators will stress basic management of the family cow or small goat herd. Areas covered will include feeding, housing, health and general management. - Livestock enthusiasts will hear about basic management of beef cattle, swine and sheep. Feeding, housing, health, and hgeneral economics will be discussed. In the poultry and rabbits classes, emphasis will be placed on management of the small poultry flock.
