Studies to
be done
on labeling
Assistant Secretary of
Agriculture Carol Tucker
Foreman has asked the
department’s Economics
Statistics and Cooperative
Service (ESCS) to conduct
further studies on accurate
net weight labeling of meat
and poultry.
A net weight proposal
made by the department’s
Food Safety and Quality
Service (FSQS) in
December 1977 requires
accurate net weight
statements on meat and
poultry products from the
time they leave the plants
until purchased at the retail
level. It also requires that
juices drained from the
product not be counted as'
part of the net weight.
Foreman said the ESCS
study will evaluate the
comments submitted to the
department by the meat and
poultry industries and
consumers. It will also
address questions raised by
an economic study sub
mitted to the department by
the Consumer Federation of
America and a December
1978 report by the General
Accounting Office.
The ESCS report will be
developed consistent with an
executive order concerning
impact analyses which went
into effect after the proposal
was made, she said. The

Milestone probably was used more in 1978 than any other sire in
the Holstein breed. His demand now far exceeds the supply.
When you call for Milestone, we may be temporarily out, but
most representatives have access to two or more ABS trucks a
month to try and prevent this from happening!
