USDA to help ■
school food programs
WASHINGTON - Schools
that contract for food service
will get help from new
regulations to hold down
costs and maintain food
quality, according to
Assistant Secretary of
Agriculture Carol Tucker
Foreman.
The rules are needed
because a growing number
of schools participating in
the national school lunch
program receive food and
services under contract
from food service
management companies,
Foreman said.
The regulations an
nounced will protect such
schools by setting new
controls over the terms and
performance of contracts. In
addition, Foreman said, the
rules require such contracts,
as well as all local food
service procurement, to
comply with federal stan

agencies.

to ten dollars per ton by purchasing in bulk. One
man can easily fill a six-row planter in five
minutes, the end of back breaking hand loading.
Would you like to SAVE $8 to $2O per ton on
your fertilizer costs in 1979? The McCurdy
Auger is the answer.

boards expressed a strong
desire to continue to write
and approve their own
contracts, the regulations
give minimum standards
school boards are to meet.
Under the new rules, bids
will be based on a 21-day
menu cycle. Payment will be
made only for food that
meets specifications listed in
the contract. Other contract
provisions will detail record
keeping and health cer
tification requirements.
The new rules will limit
the duration of food service
contracts to one year.
Because of concerns ex
pressed after the regulations
were proposed last January,
the final version permits two
yearly renewals and can

either party.
States are responsible for
assuring that local contracts
comply with the new
regulations and for
providing assistance on
request to local schools.
