There are some things in
life that are absolute.
Death. Taxes. Rain just
after you wash the windows.
And the milk inspector
showing up the day that the
scrape-out tractor conks out
or tiie water pipes have
frozen up solid.
Milk inspectors are a dairy
farm tact of life, like flies in
summer. (I’m just kidding
guys-our farm inspectors
happen to be some of the
neatest in the business.)
I’ve often wondered,
though, how many American
homes and yards would get
passing grades on some of
the 76 items listed on the
farm inspection “report
card” sheet hanging out in
themilkhouse?
For instance:
Yard clean and free of
litter - You get a black mark
here if there are any
bicycles, bats, balls, sleds or
roller skates scattered
around.
No swine or fowl -1 flunked
this section the un
forgettable day that Snort,
the butchering pig, greeted
the preacher’s wife at the
front door. (But, that’s
another story.)
Floors of impervious
material, clean and in good
repair - If you’re missing a
tile, or the carpet is worn or
snagged, or you haven’t
mopped up for the last
twelve hours, this one goes
against your score.

Soap, running water and
individual sanitary towels in
washroom and convenient to
work area - The inspector
will probably fault you if the
soap is melting away under
the water, which is still
running after the last kid’s
use, and the individual towel
happens to be located under
his feet.
Animals "clipped and
brushed - Make an
emergency appointment
with the barber.
If you fail to meet the
standards of this inspection
checklist, you will promptly
be cut off from the market
for housewife services.
Let’s hope this new in
spection program soon gets
underway.
