HARRISBURG - At the
Area 1 hearings of the Milk
Marketing Board in
Philadelphia on February 5
.Clifford Tinklepaugh,
chairman of' the Penn
. sylvania State Grange’s
Dairy Committee, observed
that the increase in the cost
of milk was
double the increase of the
retail price -of milk since
1987.
The Susquehanna County
dairy farmer noted that
while the consumer’s price
increased some 40 per cent
since 1967, the cost of milk
production in Southeastern
Pennsylvania increased
over 80 per cent
“Consumers are
especially benefitting from a
price that has not advanced
nearly' as' much as-have
prices of other food com
modities,’’ said
Tinklepaugh, “or the con
sumer price index that has
increased 102.9 per cent.”
In 1967, the consumer
price index was 100. At the
end 0f1978, it was 202.9.
This means that con
sumers today are spending
$202.90 for the same things
that were purchased iri 1967
for $lOO.
Although the farmer’s
price has not improved
significantly, retail food
