Selenium is added as sodium selenite, which is the
most biologically available form of supplemental
selenium, according to Dr. John W. Peters, Agway
animal nutritionist.
The nutritional value of selenium has recently been
established. Some of the more commonly observed
symptoms of selenium deficiency are white muscle
disease, liver necrosis and sudden death. In dairy
cattle, the lack of selenium has further been
associated with a higher-than normal incidence of
retained placenta, Dr. Peters said.
“With the addition of selenium to all Agway dairy
and beef feeds, the problem of selenium deficiency ■
actual or marginal has been greatly reduced,”
