    Henry Hackman honored for conservation

1954, out of the realm of
things to come, three entities
came to gather-a cause, an
electomc device, and a
person. The cause was
conservation, the electronic
devise was a camera, and
the person was Henry H.
Hackman.”

the Lancaster County man,
from the time when Hack
man first started to use
conservation practices on
his farm, long before the

awards which he has
received for his work.

presentations, given in the
name of conservation, where
he has shown and told of the
good done by the practices of
saving the soil.
He was one of the founders
of the Conestoga Valley
Association, which was
responsible for the
restoration of the Conestoga
River. He has also served as
president, director, ad-

of the Lancaster County Soil
Conservation District. He
has been the president of the
state association of con
servation districts, the first
president of that
organization to serve two
terms.
And it was during those
terms that the national
plowing contest came to
Hershey. No small eastern
state had ever hosted the
contest before.
His many awards include
being named the Penn-
incaster Fanning, Saturday, February 3,1979
sylvania oustanding con
servationist, winning the
Lancaster County Com
missioners award for
outstanding service,
receiving a citation by the
Pa. House of Represen
tatives for promoting wise
use of natural resources,
being honored as the
recipient of Elizabethtown
College’s humanities award,
and earning the Earl Reb
man award from the
Conestoga Valley
Association, just to name a
few.

the Lancaster County
Conservation District took
the time to honor both
Hackman and his wife, to
show their appreciation for
his efforts.
Mrs. Hackman was
presented with flowers and a
nature poetry album.
Aaron Stauffer, on behalf
of the conservation district,
presented a plaque to Henry
Hackman, given “in ap
preciation for his 27 years of
service to the Lancaster
Conservation District.
Close to 50 people attended
the dinner.
Farmers to meet
QUARRYVILLE - The
Solanco Young Farmers will
hold an educational meeting
this coming Tuesday, Feb. 6,
according to the group’s
advisor, Ronald Althoff. The
topic of the meeting will be
dairy nutrition, and it will
begin promptly at 7:30 p.m.
in the ag room of Solanco
High school.
