Changes in the social environment and the way we earn our living has had a marked influence on the family. Because parents are away from home so much, institutions such as the schools have grown to assume responsibilities once held by parents. “But parents have special responsibilities today” said Dr. Gish. They are challenged to pass along a value system which children desperately need. They must also serve to coordinate the contacts with institutions and agencies which provide for the needs of growing children. “Today’s parents need support to cope with the challenge of raising children in this age of change” concluded the speaker. It was the sixth straight year and 11th year in the past 12 that consumption of lamb and mutton has declined. Over-all red meat consumption averaged 149.6 pounds per person (retail weight), down five pounds from a year earlier and the lowest since 1975. Meanwhile, per capita consumption of ready to cook chicken moved up from 44.9 pounds in 1977 to 47.5 pounds last year - record high for the third straight year. And, consumption of ready-to-cook turkey moved up to a record high 9.5 pounds. This, after first hitting a record high 9.2 pounds in 1976 and remaining at that point in 1977. 13
