CATTLE: Compared late
previous week’s close -
prices on slaughter steers
were steady to 25 cents
higher, limited late sales SO
LDO higher, and heifers
closed 25-50 cents higher.
Cows were weak to 50 cents
lower, bulls firm, instances
50-1.00 higher.
The fed cattle trade
followed a very uneven
pattern as weather was
again the dominating factor
the fore part of week. Severe
blizzard conditions in
eastern lowa and across
Illinois paralyzed traffic and
virtually halted movement
of carcass beef into the
Chicago area and beyond till
midweek. Local packers
were forced to reduce
slaughter quotas as coolers
filled and trucks were ti<*d
up at the eastern end of the
run. Prices were forced
downward the forepart of the
week under a restricted
demand despite modest
marketings, but the early
downturn was more than
offset m an aggressive later
trade as weather conditiors
improved and traffic aga.o
began moving. Slaughter
