Driving down the road,
past the shop and then the
barn, I searched carefully to
see if I would be caught
returning.
Not a soul m sight. Maybe,
if I hurried, I could sneak
into the house without being
spotted.
Could I cure it, this ad
dicition of mine? Would I
spend the rest of my life
hiding brown bags in closets,
stealthily snatching from the
stash hidden under the beds
and bureau drawers?
It began shortly after we
were married, this com
pulsion, this weakness.
Probably no man could ever
understand the desire that
drove me to so indulge.
But another woman might.
In fact, I knew several af
flicted with the same un
controllable weakness.
My mother understands
completely. So does my
mother-in-law.
She had, in fact, just
